I don’t know about you, but there is nothing quite like hummus spread to go on everything from chips, crackers, to celery sticks. It’s absolutely delectable, and super nutritious to boot!

Homemade Hummus

The big problem I have with commercial hummus is just how expensive they are in stores. They also tend to be loaded with sodium, a big no no for anyone that cares about their health.

The best way to enjoy hummus that is both affordable and nutritious is to make your own. And for that you need a suitable blender. In this post I’ll go over my picks for the best blenders for making hummus, plus other delicious info you should know about this chickpeas based spread.

What to Look for in a Blender for Making Hummus

There are in general two types of blenders at your disposal for making home made hummus.

Immersion Blender

If you’re only making hummus and in small batches, an immersion or handheld blender will work just fine.

The advantages of an immersion blender is that it’s usually more affordable, and cleanup is easier as the blade is part of the handheld unit itself.

The drawback is that they can be tiring on the arms. Plus, it takes longer to get the right hummus texture.

For immersion blenders, look for ones with multiple speed settings to more easily control the consistency of the hummus mixture.

Countertop Blender

The consistency of hummus greatly depends on the motor power and blade quality. As such, a countertop blender is ideal for making hummus. While they are bigger, they also come with a much stronger motor to create the desired consistency in your hummus. Furthermore, it lets you make other party favorites such as crushed ice, powdered seeds, and peanut butter with ease.

Unlike smoothies and shakes, hummus is on the dry side, with little to no added liquid. This means that with low quality blenders, the chickpeas will just sit at the top, not getting blended. Hence, a powerful blender with good fluid dynamics is a must

A blender with a pulse or variable speed setting is also recommended so you can finely control the texture of the chickpeas.

Blender vs Food Processor for Hummus

Blender vs Food Processor for Hummus

Apart from using a blender, you can also use a food processor to make hummus.

The main difference with the hummus you get from these two kitchen tools is the consistency. Hummus made using food processors are thicker and more textured. Meanwhile, chickpeas pureed using high-powered blenders are smoother and creamier.

As for functionality, blenders are easier to assemble, use, store, and clean. Food processors, on the other hand, can handle bigger batches and work with drier ingredients.

What I Didn’t Like So Much

One of the greatest drawbacks to the E310 Explorian is its loud noise. The top is also hard to take off and put on. Other than that, this is one great mini hummus blender.

What I Liked About this Food Processor

For medium-sized families of 3 to 5 people, the Bonsenkitchen High Speed Vacuum Blender with its 50-ounce blending beaker, is the better choice than the Vitamix above. Aside from the slightly larger container, it offers sophisticated controls and a slightly more powerful motor to handle the extra load.

With its high-speed revolution of 30000PRM, it will blitz you smooth and creamy hummus in just a few seconds. I love that it doesn’t need as much liquid as the Vitamix in making hummus because of its excellent fluid dynamics.

If you use your blender for making smoothies in the morning as well, you’ll be happy to know the self-cleaning Bonsenkitchen also comes with vacuum anti-oxidation technology, which minimizes nutrient loss as you blend your favorite veggies and fruits into fuel for your body.

What I Didn’t Like So Much

The Bonsenkitchen is engineered in the US but the manufacturing is outsourced to China. As such, the instructions can be confusing because it hasn’t been proofread for proper grammar and spelling. There are more cases of defective products but the company is very diligent in dealing with them.

What I Liked About this Food Processor

If you lack kitchen space for countertop blenders, the KOIOS 12-Speed Immersion Blender is a great alternative.

Though it’s not as powerful as the other products in our list, at 400 watts, it still does a great job pureeing chickpeas for hummus. It’s easy to control the consistency of the hummus with the 12 variable speed settings and the turbo function. Plus, the 5-foot cord is generous enough to use the soft grip arm comfortably.

Of course, you can also use the KOIOS for more than just hummus-making. Both its mixing beaker and food chopper with S-blade can be used to prepare different types of food. Even better, this immersion blender doesn’t make as much noise as the Vitamix, allowing you to use it anytime of the day.

You can see the KOIOS in action in this video:

What I Didn’t Like So Much

The product information available on Amazon is confusing. It says that it has an 800-watt motor. But, on the product itself, it’s stamped on the handle that it is only 400 watts. Though the product still performs well, the misleading information has been a source of disappointment for many users.

How to Make Hummus using your Blender

Once you have your chosen blender, the next step is, of course, to learn how to use it to make hummus.

Simple Hummus Recipe

There are many different ingredients that you can use to jazz up your hummus. But, the most important thing is a good base. Here’s my favorite basic hummus recipe.

  • 4 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • A few tablespoons of water
  • 1 can chickpeas, drained
  • 2 tbsp tahini
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 small garlic cloves, chopped
  • Paprika and chopped fresh parsley to sprinkle

  • Except for the water, add all the ingredients to you blender, starting from the lemon juice.
  • Cover the blender.
  • Use the pulse feature to puree the ingredients.
  • Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.
  • Blend on high until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Top with a dash of paprika and fresh parsley before serving.

Check out the video below to see how this basic hummus recipe is made:

Is Hummus Healthy? What You Should Know

So far, we’ve learned that hummus is very easy to make. But, is it healthy?

Well, the good news is this veggie dip is packed with healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. A 100g serving of hummus contains:

  • Calories: 166
  • Fat: 9.6g
  • Protein: 7.9g
  • Carbs: 14.3g
  • Fiber: 6.0g
  • Manganese: 39%*
  • Copper: 26%*
  • Folate: 21%*
  • Magnesium: 18%*
  • Phosphorus: 18%*
  • Iron: 14%*
  • Zinc: 12%*
  • Thiamin: 12%*
  • Vitamin B6: 10%*
  • Potassium: 7%*

*Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)

Hummus is a great gluten-free plant-based protein source for vegetarians and vegans. Not to mention that it also contains iron, folate, phosphorus and B vitamins that people who are in these diets often lack.

In fact, according to Elizabeth G. Matteo, a registered dietitian at Boston University’s Sargent Choice Nutrition Center, hummus is one of the most nutritious dips or spreads

Though this veggie dip is healthy, it still needs to be eaten in moderation. A healthy portion of hummus can range from 2 to 4 tablespoons depending on whether you’re eating it as a snack or for lunch.

Here are some other health benefits of hummus:

Sesame seeds, from which tahini is made of, and chickpeas are both proven to reduce markers of inflammation. At the same time, olive oil contains powerful antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties.

Improves Digestive Health

Hummus has a high fiber content which promotes good digestive health and encourages good gut bacteria growth. The fiber in this healthy spread also gets converted into butyrate, a fatty acid which has been linked to reduced colon cancer risk.

Helps Control Blood Sugar Levels

Chickpeas can also slow down the digestion of carbs. This means that the sugar from the carbs get steadily released to the  bloodstream, preventing sudden spikes.

Legumes like chickpeas are known for lowering bad LDL cholesterol levels. Another hummus ingredient, olive oil, has been proven to lower risk of overall death by 11% and decrease the risk of heart disease by 10%.

Good for Weight Management

Hummus is an excellent source of dietary fiber. This not only boosts the satiety level, it also reduces the hunger hormone levels. Moreover, studies show that people who regularly eat hummus have a lower body weight and are less likely to be obese.

Gluten Free

Hummus is a great option for people who have allergies or intolerances because it is naturally gluten-, nut- and dairy-free.

Are you Ready to Make Some Delicious Homemade Hummus?

With the good blender and recipe in hand, hummus as you can see is in fact very easy to make at home. More importantly, it can be much more healthy and less expensive than the store bought versions.
