A meat slicer is one of those things you didn’t know you needed until you’ve tried it. All of a sudden you’re churning out your own deli meats, cheese slices, hot pot meat, and more. Most people make their money back from investing in a meat slicer in the first year.

If you’re on a tight budget, there are decent meat slicers that can be bought for under $100 if you know what brand and model to pick.

Of course, you still get what you pay for. These products won’t win any speed contest due to the smaller motors. You’ll have to give them a break from time to time to prevent overheating as well.

But if you have a small family or only intend to use your meat slicer occasionally, a budget meat slicer is the smart way to go. So without further adieu.

What I Liked About this Meat Slicer:

For meat slicers under $100, the OSTBA Electric Meat Slicer tops our list. This highly rated machine is very well-rounded in terms of the features it offers. At first, its light weight was a little worrying but the suction cup proved to be very effective. Another safety feature that I really dig is the need to have both the safety lock and power button pressed at the same time for the slicer to work.

In terms of performance, it’s the best in its price range. While its direct driven motor is not as powerful as expensive models, it’s still faster than belt-driven ones under $100. This type of motor also makes less noise. Even better, it’s semi-automatic so the food tray bounces back with a little push during slicing, making the process faster and energy-efficient.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

Considering its low price, it’s not surprising that the materials used aren’t top notch. The housing is made of anodized aluminum and the blade is stainless steel. However, the clear plastic food carriage is brittle and the motor gear is made of plastic. The company has a 24-month warranty and excellent customer service but it’s still inconvenient to have the parts replaced.

Most of its parts are also removable but only the blade is dishwasher-safe.

What I Liked About this Meat Slicer:

Our runner-up, the Albohes Electric Meat Slicer, is a hidden gem that has all the makings of a high quality budget meat slicer. It has all the basics covered with a blade guard and suction feet for safety and an adjustment dial for thickness. What made me fall in love with this product, however, are the three blades that come with it. You get to choose between a non-serrated, serrated, and undulated blades, giving you the freedom to slice different types of food without having to spend more.

I also like that usage, cleanup, and assembly are all pretty straightforward. According to their customer support, all the removable parts are dishwasher-safe as long as you don’t use acid and alkaline cleaning materials. Plus, the gears are made of nylon and glass fiber so they’re stronger than plastic.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

Though the belt-driven motor means that repairs are relatively inexpensive, it’s a pain if you want to slice a large amount of food, since it can’t run for more than 5 minutes at a time. I also wouldn’t advise cutting frozen meat with the Albohes since it isn’t as powerful as commercial models. Just let it thaw for 20 to 30 minutes before slicing.

What I Liked About this Meat Slicer:

What caught my eye when I was checking out the CukAid Electric Meat Slicer are its ceramic-coated stainless steel blade and wide thickness adjustment range. This means that there’s no pesky sticking of the food during cutting and you can use it to prepare more types of dishes. Of course, like all of the meat slicers in this list, it’s also easy to assemble and clean.

My favorite part about the Cukaid meat slicer that sets it apart from others in the sub $100 list is the 7.5” ceramic coated cutting blade. The best thing about ceramic blades compared to stainless steel ones is that they stay sharper for longer, requiring less sharpening. Nobody wants to take a meat slicer apart to sharpen the blades every few weeks, and with the Cukaid, you won’t have to.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

If your main purpose for getting a meat slicer is to make deli thin slices, then this isn’t your best option. Though the product information says that it can make paper thin slices, the cuts made at the lowest setting are still quite thick. Plus, there’s a pretty large gap between the sliding carriage and the blade so the meat slides down into the gap as you try to slice it. A quick fix I found is to partially freeze the meat before cutting.

What I Liked About this Meat Slicer:

Buyers who are planning to use their meat slicer for only the occasional cold cuts and cheese will love the Elite Platinum. It’s cheap and it isn’t that powerful but it gets the job done. Combining rustproof die-cast aluminum and a gear-driven motor, it’s pretty sturdy and will last long with proper care. It can also process more meat at a time since it turns off automatically after 10 minutes instead of 5.

Another thing that I liked about it is that it doesn’t make that much noise. It’s also small and compact so it’s great if you don’t have a lot of kitchen space.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

Cleanup is a bit tedious because only the blade and safety guard come off. The platform isn’t removable and only swings open for cleaning.

Another issue I have with the Elite Platinum is its back plate, which flexes during use resulting in a tapered cut. The thickness dial also goes out of position when cutting. This means that you need to pay attention to it otherwise you’ll get Inconsistent slices.

  • Weight: 5.84 lbs
  • Power: Manual
  • Blade Size and Type: 6.7-inch non-serrated blade
  • Warranty: 1-year warranty

What I Liked About this Meat Slicer:

Considering its price, I was surprised by how good the Befen Manual Meat Slicer is when it comes to making paper thin slices of meat for hotpot. As my chosen meat slicer for the manual category, it takes up less space and is slightly more affordable than electric-powered ones. What made me pick the Befen, however, is the thoughtful way it has been designed. For example, it has suction cup feet for safety, a bag for freezing the meat, and an extra blade for free.

Even better, the blade guard works really well especially when combined with proper use. The way it’s designed even if you accidentally place your finger there, you’ll most likely only nick your fingertip since it’s blocked by the guard. There are also laser-engraved tips on how to use it and their customer service is outstanding.

What I Didn’t Like So Much:

Cleanup is tedious since all of its parts aren’t dishwasher-safe. It also requires a lot of strength to cut thick slices of frozen meat so you have to be careful with that. Finally, there’s a bit of a learning curve in using the Befen in terms of how you position the food guide and set the blade.

How Often Should I Clean a Meat Slicer?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meat slicers should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every four hours if it is continuously used like in commercial setups. Otherwise, cleaning it properly after each use is appropriate.

By proper and thorough cleaning, this means that you have to take apart, clean, and sanitize all the surfaces that get into contact with the food. This is to prevent Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and other germs from spreading, getting into food, and cross-contaminating onto other surfaces.

Simple Steps to Cleaning a Meat Slicer

Before cleaning a meat slicer, there are several safety reminders that you need to follow.

  • Wear cut-resistant gloves during cleaning and maintenance, especially when handling the blade, to protect your hands.
  • Avoid using abrasive materials like steel wool when cleaning your meat slicer to prevent scratching.
  • Always check the manual to see which parts can be submerged in water and placed in the dishwasher prior to cleaning.

That said, here’s a simplified version of how you can clean your meat slicer. Depending on the model, the instructions might slightly vary so it’s still best to consult the manual.

  1. Set the cut thickness to zero.
  2. Turn off and unplug the machine.
  3. Place a gentle scrubbing pad on a cleaning wand.
  4. Use it to wipe both sides of the blade to remove large food particles. Make sure to wear cut-resistant gloves.
  5. Remove, wash carefully, and dry the food chute, center plate, and blade deflector.
  6. Depending on whether you have a blade removal device, you can either remove the blade from the holder or leave it on.
  7. Use warm, soapy water and a clean rag to clean the blade. Starting from the center and going outward, wipe both sides of the blade.
  8. Spray with a disinfectant and wipe clean the exterior and other remaining parts.
  9. Oil the slide rods with a foodgrade lubricant.
  10. If water accumulates in some parts of the slicer, carefully use a lint-free towel to dry.
  11. Once all the parts are dry, reassemble the slicer.

During cleaning, make sure to check all the parts for signs of corrosion. Replace all the damaged components.

How Do I Sharpen the Blades?

Blade sharpening is another part of meat slicer maintenance that you should never forget. This not only ensures uniform slices, it also preserves the blade quality and makes it last longer.

You’ll know when the blade needs sharpening when the food starts to shred instead of getting cleanly sliced.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cut-resistant gloves – Keep your hands safe
  • Safety glasses – To prevent stone particles from getting in your eyes
  • Sharpening stone – Can’t sharpen without this of course
  • Food-grade lubricant or cooking oil
  • 2 soft cloths – One for washing the blade, another for drying

  1. Switch off the slicer and unplug it. Let it cool.
  2. Wear your cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
  3. Remove the blade cover.
  4. Clean the blade with some soapy water and dry with a clean cloth.
  5. Apply some lubricant or oil on the blade.
  6. Adjust the blade against the sharpener as per the product manual. If you’re using a separate whetstone, make sure that it’s securely in place.
  7. After checking that everything is in place, plug and turn the slicer on. Let it run for a minute.
  8. Check if the blade is sharp enough. If it’s still dull, let it run for another minute.
  9. Once it’s sharp enough, unplug the machine and wipe it again with some soapy water to remove the stone and metal particles. Dry.
  10. Return the blade cover into place.
  11. Turn on the machine once more and check if everything is working fine.
